เมื่อวันที่ 30 เมษายน ที่ผ่านมา ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย สำนักงานภาคใต้ จัดงานแถลงข่าวภาวะเศรษฐกิจภาคใต้ ไตรมาส 1ประจำปี 2553  ขึ้น ณ สโมสรธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย สำนักงานภาคใต้
   นายนิรุธ รักษาเสรี ผู้อำนวยการอาวุโส ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย สำนักงานภาคใต้ กล่าวถึง ภาวะเศรษฐกิจภาคใต้ไตรมาสที่ 1 ปี ประจำปี 2553 ว่าปรับตัวดีขึ้นจากไตรมาสก่อน โดยรายได้ของเกษตรกรขยายตัว จากการปรับเพิ่มขึ้นทางด้านราคาเป็นสำคัญ ขณะที่ปริมาณผลผลิตปรับลดลงเล็กน้อย ส่วนปริมาณผลผลิตสัตว์น้ำจากการทำประมงทะเลและการเพาะเลี้ยงกุ้งเพิ่มขึ้น และการผลิตในภาคอุตสาหกรรมขยายตัวทุกประเภท ทั้งยางแปรรูป อาหารทะเลแปรรูป อาหารทะเลกระป๋อง ถุงมือยาง ไม้ยางพาราและดีบุก ขณะเดียวกันการท่องเที่ยวขยายตัว รวมทั้งความต้องการการจ้างงานแรงงานของผู้ประกอบการเพิ่มขึ้น ขณะที่การเบิกจ่ายเงินงบประมาณของส่วนราชการลดลงตามการลดลงของรายจ่ายลงทุน สำหรับอัตราเงินเฟ้อเร่งตัวขึ้นจากไตรมาสก่อน
   ในส่วนของภาคเกษตร ดัชนีรายได้เกษตรกรขยายตัวจากไตรมาสเดียวกันปีก่อนร้อยละ 79.1 จากการปรับเพิ่มขึ้นด้านราคา โดยดัชนีราคาพืชผลเกษตรที่สำคัญเพิ่มขึ้นร้อยละ 82.4 เป็นผลจากการเพิ่มขึ้นของราคายางพาราและปาล์มน้ำมันเป็นสำคัญ ส่วนปริมาณผลผลิตสัตว์น้ำทั้งจากการทำประมงทะเลและการเพาะเลี้ยงกุ้งเพิ่มขึ้นเนื่องจากมีการนำสัตว์น้ำจากการทำประมงในน่านน้ำประเทศมาเลเซียและอินโดนีเซียมาขึ้นเทียบท่าเรือประมงสงขลาและปัตตานีเป็นสำคัญ
   การท่องเที่ยว  การท่องเที่ยวของภาคใต้ขยายตัวดี โดยจำนวนนักท่องเที่ยวที่ผ่านด่านตรวจคนเข้าเมืองเพิ่มขึ้นถึงร้อยละ 38.1 เนื่องจากการทำการตลาดในระยะใกล้ เช่น จีน ออสเตรเลีย และอินเดีย ประกอบกับการฟื้นตัวของเศรษฐกิจโลก ทำให้ภาพรวมของการท่องเที่ยวขยายตัวได้ดี  สำหรับสถานการณ์การเมืองจากการชุมนุมส่งผลกระทบต่อการท่องเที่ยวของภาคใต้ในเดือนเมษายนน้อย เพราะจากในช่วงสงกรานต์ที่ผ่านมามีนักท่องเที่ยวเข้ามาเที่ยวในภาคใต้จำนวนมาก จากข้อมูลยอดจากการจองโรงแรมเต็ม
   การเงิน  ณ สิ้นไตรมาสที่ 1 ปี 2553 คาดว่าเงินฝากและเงินให้สินเชื่อของสาขาธนาคารพาณิชย์ในภาคใต้ขยายตัวร้อยละ 7.3 และร้อยละ 6.5 ตามลำดับ เมื่อเทียบกับสิ้นเดือนเดียวกันของปีก่อน ตามการฟื้นตัวของเศรษฐกิจ และรายได้ของเกษตรกรที่เพิ่มขึ้นจากราคาสินค้าเกษตรสำคัญที่ปรับตัวสูงขึ้น ทั้งยางพาราและปาล์มน้ำมัน 
   “สำหรับแนวโน้มไตรมาส 2 ปี 2553 มีแนวโน้มขยายตัว จากปัจจัยบวกที่สำคัญ ได้แก่ ราคาสินค้าเกษตรสำคัญยังอยู่ในระดับสูงโดยเฉพาะยางพารา และผลผลิตยางพารามีแนวโน้มเพิ่มขึ้น ส่งผลให้รายได้เกษตรกรขยายตัว เป็นผลดีต่อการอุปโภคบริโภคและการลงทุนภาคเอกชน อย่างไรก็ตามสถานการณ์ทางการเมืองคาดว่า จะส่งผลต่อภาคการท่องเที่ยวชัดเจนมากในไตรมาสนี้” นายนิรุธ กล่าวสรุป
